As we look ahead to 2024, this year in particular is set to be a busy year for Wi-SUN Alliance and for Wi-SUN FAN technology – a year full of opportunities and exciting announcements.
Around this time last year, we discussed some of the trends we expected to see at a time of huge change and disruption across the energy sector in particular, but in other areas as well – from growth in renewables and smart grids, to innovative smart city applications.
We have welcomed these developments and continued to grow as a global ecosystem of leading silicon and product companies, utilities, services providers, academics and more, expanding our presence in markets like Latin America and India, and embracing new opportunities as smart utilities and smart cities evolve in an ever-changing world.
2024 is shaping up to be an exceptional year for us, as we prepare for DISTRIBUTECH this month in Orlando, Florida (February 26-29) and take the opportunity to showcase our Wi-SUN FAN capabilities for the utilities market.
With this in mind, we asked some of our members on the stand at Enlit Europe last November to offer their insights on what 2024 might bring for Wi-SUN and our growing community.
For Exegin President, Leslie Mulder, the industry buzz is around industrial IoT, AMI and associated Distributed Energy Resources (DER) within the smart energy space.
Gweltas Radenac at WISeKey agrees that smart metering will become a bigger focus for energy companies this year, with large smart meter deployments being rolled out in order to meet COP28 and decarbonisation goals. Interoperability will be key for smart meters to communicate securely with other assets on the network, particularly as part of a smart city development.
As IoT technologies continue to develop and grow there is always a risk that there are simply too much choice. For Peter Knazko at Renesas Electronics, integration and convergence remain at the heart of any IoT network, driven by the need for security, robust networks and interoperability. As they evolve – to support both high speed requirements and low speed components for energy efficient applications – the technology needs to accommodate different requirements on a single network.
For me, IoT is set to play a pivotal role in the way we live. We are seeing some interesting shifts and I believe this year will see some transformative developments and exciting trends, including supporting sustainability and renewable energy – perhaps in ways we cannot imagine right now.
What we do know is that renewable energy will deliver some of the most interesting use cases for IoT technology, working hand in hand with other technologies like AI, and that open standards-based wireless communications will become an important enabler for large-scale IoT applications.
I welcome your thoughts or predictions on what else we might see in the year ahead.
I would also like to take this opportunity to wish all of our members, partners and the wider Wi-SUN Alliance community a very successful 2024.
