Home Area Networking (HAN)

Wi-SUN HAN 2.0 is the latest evolution of the Wi-SUN Alliance Home Area Network standard,

bringing together three certified wireless communication routes under a single, interoperable framework built on the open IEEE 802.15.4 SUN physical layer.

The Home Area Network (HAN) profile focuses specifically on the connected energy home — linking electricity meters, energy management systems, and household devices.

Benefits of Wi-SUN HAN Certification

Wi-SUN HAN 2.0 Communication Routes

Wi-SUN HAN 2.0 defines three distinct communication paths: Route IoT, Route B, and Route HAN. Each is optimised for a specific link within the home energy ecosystem. All three share the same IEEE 802.15.4 SUN physical layer operating in the 920 MHz Sub-GHz band, ensuring compatibility and minimising development costs.

Route IoT — Joint Metering for the Next Generation

Rather than deploying separate wireless systems for multiple applications such as gas and water meters, EV charging systems, energy management systems, solar power storage, and distributed energy resources, Route IoT carries all of this data through the existing electricity smart meter infrastructure.

Route IoT specifically supports:

  • Low-power operation compatible with battery-powered water and gas meters, enabling 10+ years of operation without a battery change.
  • Relay transmission for connecting outdoor EV charging systems and roof-mounted solar power generation equipment.
  • JUTA interface compatibility — the Route IoT application defined by the Japan Telemetering Association for joint gas and water meter reading via the electricity meter.
  • Home appliance connectivity using the HAN profile for integration with ECHONET Lite devices.

Route B — The Energy Monitoring Backbone

Route B is the original and most widely deployed Wi-SUN HAN profile. It originated within the Japanese smart-meter ecosystem and has become the dominant HAN communication model in that market.

Route B operates between the electricity smart meter (installed by the power company) and a customer-side HEMS controller or in-home display.

Using the ECHONET Lite application protocol over 920 MHz, Route B gives householders real-time visibility of their electricity consumption, enabling time-of-use tariff management, peak load avoidance, and integration with solar and storage systems.

Route HAN — Smart Home Device Control

Route HAN extends the HEMS ecosystem to individual appliances throughout the home. Air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, water heaters and lighting fixtures supporting ECHONET Lite communicate directly with the HEMS gateway, enabling automated scheduling, energy optimization, and demand-response participation.

The Enhanced HAN extension of Route HAN adds relay functionality, allowing appliances in areas with weak radio coverage to connect through intermediate HAN nodes. It also supports sleeping device modes, critical for battery-operated sensors that need to operate for years without maintenance.

A Shared Technical Foundation

All three routes share a common physical and network layer, significantly reducing the cost and complexity of developing multi-route products:
