TOKYO — March 28, 2026 – The Wi-SUN Alliance, a global industry association advancing interoperable wireless networking solutions, will host the Wi-SUN Open House 2026 on Friday, March 27, 2026, at the Ochanomizu Sola City Conference Center in Tokyo. Marking Wi-SUN’s 14th anniversary in Japan, the event will bring together utilities, technology providers, policymakers, and academic researchers to explore how Wi-SUN technologies are being deployed across Japan’s smart utility infrastructure, highlighting Japan’s role as a leading implementation market for multi-utility network integration. The event will also showcase live deployments. Admission is complimentary; advance registration is required and seats are limited to 160.
“Wi-SUN was born in Japan, and fourteen years later, Japan remains where the most ambitious deployments are happening,” said Phil Beecher, president and CEO of Wi-SUN Alliance. “The Route IoT protocol is exactly what this technology was designed to enable — a single open specification unifying electricity, gas, and water infrastructure at large scale. That is not a future use case; it is happening now, and the Open House is where you can learn more.”
Since its founding in Japan in 2012, the Wi-SUN Alliance has grown to more than 300 member companies across 46 countries. The Alliance has led the development of key specifications including Wi-SUN Route B, mandated for smart meter-to-home gateway communication across Japan’s electricity network, as well as Wi-SUN HAN, Enhanced HAN, JUTA, and FAN, each widely adopted across Japan’s energy and utility infrastructure.
Japan remains central to the development and deployment of Wi-SUN technology. The recently introduced Wi-SUN Route IoT extends this foundation, enabling unified wireless connectivity across electricity, gas and water infrastructure over a single open protocol.
The Open House will include a solutions showcase where Wi-SUN Alliance member companies will demonstrate their technologies supporting next-generation wireless infrastructure. Exhibitors include Digi International, Itron Japan, Landis+Gyr Japan, Renesas Electronics, SEALSQ, Silicon Labs, STMicroelectronics, and others. Demos will span smart metering, IoT connectivity, sub-GHz wireless SoCs, post-quantum cryptography for IoT devices, and multi-vendor network infrastructure.

Michiaki Takahashi (髙橋 道明 氏), Manager of the DX Promotion Department at TEPCO Power Grid, Inc., part of one of the world’s largest electric utilities, will present on TEPCO Power Grid’s deployment and utilization of the Wi-SUN Route IoT standard, which enables joint meter reading and other functions across electricity, gas, and water networks over a single, unified wireless infrastructure. This represents one of the most significant deployments of Wi-SUN technology in Japan to date and marks a major step toward multi-utility digital transformation.
“The IoT Route standard has given us a practical path to realizing joint meter reading at scale,” said Takahashi. “Wi-SUN’s open, interoperable framework is central to how TEPCO Power Grid is building the next generation of digital grid infrastructure within its Greater Tokyo service area.”
Rumi Iizuka (飯塚 留美 氏), Principal Researcher at the Foundation for MultiMedia Communications (FMMC), will present on global trends in IoT business and regulation, drawing on nearly two decades of experience in international spectrum policy and advising Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on spectrum management policy.
“The regulatory environment for IoT wireless systems is evolving rapidly across all major markets,” remarked Iizuka. “Understanding how spectrum policy and international standards intersect is essential for any organization deploying large-scale IoT infrastructure today.”
Prof. Hiroshi Harada (原田 博司 氏), chairman of the Wi-SUN Alliance Board of Directors and Professor at Kyoto University and research executive director at NICT, will present on the current status, technical features, research and development activities and future development roadmap of Wi-SUN FAN, HAN and IoT Route specifications, based on his role in developing and advancing next-generation wireless systems.
“Wi-SUN has achieved tens of millions deployments in Japan and matured from a promising specification into a proven global infrastructure technology,” stated Harada. “The continued evolution of FAN 1.1 and IoT Route reflects both the technical depth of our ecosystem and the growing complexity of the deployment challenges our members are solving in the field.”
